Day 211 ~ There are 155 days remaining…

30 Jul

For little things that make life better, warmer, funnier, brighter, sweeter, richer, juicier, and more interesting. For all that makes up what is.

For the pieces of the past:

1. Today marks the start of the 30th week of the year; a new start is ahead, and our past has prepared us.

2. A trip home–the reminder of where I come from.

3. Time spent, and treasured forever in my recall.

4. For the times I stretched and found myself uncomfortable. It was then that I was growing.

5. For every opportunity I’ve ever taken to fly by the seat of my pants. The landing was sometimes tough, but it was always worth the ride.

6. For those who have frustrated me the most. They were masters. I see that now.

7. For the times I forgave myself and let go. With each act of conscious self-love, my load got lighter, while my life became richer.

8. For the patterns which can only reveal themselves through time. Look back, closely; you’ll see that, statistically speaking, everything is going to be OK.

For this one now moment:

1. Warm sheets drying on the line, in the breeze.

2. The smell of fresh bread baking in the oven.

3. The hummingbird that stares through my kitchen window…

4. Wind-chimes: The instrument the angels play.

5. Dogs, snoring.

6. Sharron Stroud. Happy Birthday today to one of the most profound human beings I’ve ever come to know, learn from, or love. A true master.

7. Children, laughing.

8. The chubby squirrel who eats from my Orange Tree and tosses the peals every which way..he is so cute.

9. Lunch with a Sister-Friend, anticipated.

For the blessings that are on their way:

1. Free choice–we’ve got power!

2. Tomorrows photo shoot for my new book with photographer, Karey Cottrell. I look forward to our time, and to moving one step closer to a finished product.

3. Thursday: You’re Invited!

4. That bread that’s baking is sure to be delicious..the scent that fills the house is making my mouth water.

5. Sun-Tea in a jar, sitting under the sun.

6. For Sundays. The whole day feels like morning.

7. For the endless possibilities that tomorrow holds. Endless..possibilities.

For the little things, we sometimes take for granted, that many others around the world JUST DON’T HAVE:

1. Clean Water.

2. A home.

3. Freedom.

4. Shoes.

5. Food for my children.

6. An education.

7. Choice.

8. Health Insurance.

9. Peace in my heart.

However, whenever..count your blessings.

Days 53-83 ~ 30 Days and 150 Reasons to feel *Grateful*

18 Mar

The past 30 days have been a whirlwind, of which I’m grateful for the opportunity to recall in the form of 150 blessings…

*Unedited Gratitude:

My grandmother passed away, just days before my birthday in late February.  She’s mentally checked in and out (so to speak) slipping into Alzheimer’s  in these final years, and the journey was long–especially for my father, who cherished her with all his heart, and who provided only the very best in terms of care and support, but who rarely was even recognized, or remembered..

I always loved her.  She used to say “Oh, thanks, thanks”, twice like that.  Not “thank you”, but rather, “Oh, thanks, thanks.”  She used to snort a little when she got to laughing hard, and she smiled almost always (as Joy was her natural state),  and she giggled at almost everything, and found the humor in almost anything.  Her smile was radiant, and her energy attracted some of the most beautiful people in the world.

She was a Hollywood Movie and Television Actress…she starred in I love Lucy, The Ten Commandments, and the list goes on.

I never did ask her much about any of that, because whenever I tried, she shrugged it all off like it was no big deal, and changed the subject.

I think I’ve seen every I love Lucy episode, watching for Grandma Phyllis.

She always came to spend Easters at the Beach House, and Grandma Phyllis and Dad were always just as eager as I was to head over to the high school for the annual egg hunt.  I’d ride with her in her car, because then I didn’t have to miss her company.  Her car was as immaculate, and well kept as she was.

She was stunning.

What a beautiful woman to have in my life for so many years.

Day’s before she made her transition, I went out sailing/whale watching with my Dad and boys–we saw more dolphins than we had ever seen before in our entire lives.  It was as if the ocean had come alive, as thousands of jumping, smiling dolphins danced across the water for as far as the eye could see, and right up next to our boat.  It was…likely one of the most…magnificent, and profound natural events I’ve ever witnessed.  We couldn’t believe our eyes…

We all wished Grandma Phyllis was there to see what we were seeing.  Her most favorite creature on Gods green Earth, was the dolphin.

1. I’m grateful for memories; the fastest, safest way to travel back in time to the brightest places.

2. I’m grateful for grandmothers–I had two of them, and was blessed to have them in my life well into my 30’s..how blessed am I.

3. For Grandma Phyllis’s freedom.  She is free now~free to swim with the dolphins.

My youngest heard me talking with my Dad about the Dolphins, and their freedom paralleling her own now, and later my 7 year old Man-Sprout asks me, “Mommy, did all those Dolphins come for her?”

4. For the brilliant mind, clear perspective and open heart of a child.

5. For her legacy–one of unbridled love, relentless trailblazing, humor and exquisite kindness.

6. For Reruns.

7. For the example of my father–what a kind, loving, and compassionate man.

8. I’m grateful for Edible Arrangements–Dad said the large bouquet of Chocolate covered strawberries actually DID help sooth his soul!

9. I’m grateful I opted against flowers, and instead sent chocolate covered berries, and made a donation in her honor to Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.

Anyway…

I came across an old friend.

I found her Etsy site online—her last name was hyphenated, indicating I’d found my childhood friend, and reminding me that we were both now all grown up.

She’d become an artist, and was selling her ceramic jewelry online.  I loved what I saw, and one bracelet in particular, one with little butterflies on it, had clearly been made for me.

I purchased it, included a short note, and waited for my bracelet to arrive.

The small package arrived within days, and the bracelet was even more exquisite in person than it had been in the pictures, and I quickly put in on, and moved it slowly around my wrist, catching every detail of one of the prettiest, most perfect things I’d ever purchased for myself.  I saw the tiny butterflies, so intricately painted, and remembered us as little girls, running barefoot through the sawdust from my booth to hers, laughing almost always–

And,  I remembered her little brother, and wondered if he remembered me, too—I always have wondered what he remembered from that day…

I’ve never forgotten that day; not a single detail.

Inside the box my bracelet came in, was a note from Sierra, including her phone number, and an “if you’re ever here in Vegas” note.

While I felt like I’ve been everywhere else during the months that followed, I hadn’t been to Vegas, so I hadn’t called her, but I did wear my favorite bracelet quite often, and I always received compliments, and thought of her when I did.

One day, a woman in a restaurant walked by and stopped at my table to admire the piece of jewelry, and even moved it around my wrist, the way I did when I first saw it, taking  in every detail, and finally asking, “Wherever did you find such a unique piece of jewelry?  I love this!”

As I wrote down Sierra’s online information on the back of my business card for the stranger, I wondered to myself, “why haven’t I reached out and why hadn’t I let her know just how many people go crazy over the beauty she expresses through her art?

Later that night, I called the number in her little note inside the box my bracelet came in, but there was no answer; and I was unprepared to leave a message, so I hung up, vowing to try again another time.

Not even 10 minutes later, she called me back, and after 30 minutes of catching up through our familiar laughter, that day came up.

Her little brother did remember the day, and she remembered the day, too, although she’d forgotten about how it had been in the newspaper.  I think I only remembered that it was in the newspaper because the reporter stated that “2 boys had nearly been abducted at Bluebird Park”, but it wasn’t 2 boys.  It was a little boy and a little girl, and those children were her little brother, and Me.

We talked about that day, and what we recalled.  Her little brother remembered too, and she said, “in fact, not even 10 days ago, we talked about that…how weird.

Then she asked, “What happened?”

Sierra and I talked about the way it had affected us all in our parenting today, and about our children, families, work and lives, and reminisced over a childhood we both agreed was a gift in that dreamy little town.  The fun we had, the trouble we got into, and the smoothies we shared…it’s as if it all happened yesterday.

All you need to bring the beauty and joy of yesterday alive again, is an old friend.

Oh, and what happened that day??

Well…

We all, even her little brother, went to the Girls Club after school every day.

The girls Club sat nestled above Bluebird Park, and every day, a councilor or two would take us down to the park to play.  Sierra’s little brother was cute; I always liked him, and always felt sorry for him when he’d get left out.  On this particular day, he wandered off alone and up the bike path, behind the tall trees, and sat on the curb of the bike path to play alone in the dirt.

Across the path from him, and just up from the tall trees were some logs—like telephone poles, all placed strategically for children to climb on.  Leaning on the poles, across from where he was playing in the dirt, a man forced a “casual” lean, but his energy was anything but casual as he watched my small friend with long shaggy blond hair, play innocently and unsuspectingly in the dirt.

I immediately had a bad feeling about the man, and went to where *Sam was playing, and said, “come on Sam, let’s go,“ while the man stared on.

I remember Sam arguing, and I remember him being intent on staying right where he was, and I remember getting upset with him and scared all at once. I wanted to run away, but I couldn’t leave him there alone…

I looked at the man, and his eyed locked with mine.  I remember the sick feeling in my stomach… the urgency in my chest.

“Come ON, Sam, let’s GO!” I demanded, and the next thing I remember was wondering how that man could move so fast.

I remember him coming at us, so fast, his arms stretched out wide, like an eagle honing in on its prey, as he reached out for us both, and I remember my scream…one continuous scream that surely all of Laguna Beach could hear, and I ran, screaming…

Terrified and running down the bike path, I looked back, hoping to God that Sam would be running right behind me—praying that he got away.

I saw the man, running up the hillside toward the parking lot in the distance, and Sam running right behind me, his look of sheer terror, and his shaggy blond locks bouncing with every step…

We got away.

And we never forgot it.

Where were we?  Ah…#20.

Happy 50th Day of the Year!

19 Feb

Am I really 12 days behind schedule?   Ok, I can explain…

It’s been an exciting time!  Over the past 12 days, I’ve spent precious time with thousands of Southern California students, Appeared at the AEF Authors Festival, Lead 3 Assemblies, visited 17 classrooms, and created 525 Love Jars with 1st-3rd graders — we had one SPECTACULAR Valentine’s Day-Week! View photos in the Reading is Fundamental of Southern California (RIFSoCal) Newsletter HERE.

    60 Blessings for Today

The 50th Day of the Year

For Soul Nourishing Opportunities:

1. AEF Authors Festival

MY Thanks to the Alhambra Educational Foundation for the invitation to read my best-seller, “What Love Is A-Z” to multiple groups during this special celebration of literature.  We had so much fun!  What a *phenomenal* group of dedicated educators and staff–it was a privilege to participate and I look forward to seeing you again next year!  *Special Thanks to ASB President “Ashley” for her assistance and support during my visit.

2. FAB (Film Advisory Board Award)

“What Love Is A-Z” was nominated and won the Tribute for Excellence in Children’s Literature from the Film Advisory Board (FAB), and I am so honored!  My abundant gratitude to the board for their recognition and acknowledgement.

3. 525 Children, OH MY!  (That’s a LOT ‘o Love!)

This was a magical day–there is no other way to describe the joy, connection, celebration, friendship and LOVE that filled the air at Middleton Elementary School in East Los Angeles this past Friday!

Our youth need us now more than ever before–children deserve to feel empowered, know that they are loved and treasured just the way they are, and be reminded of just how big of a role they play in our lives now, and in the future.

Without them, what have we got exactly?

My abundant gratitude to the dedicated LAUSD staff, teachers, personnel, parent volunteers, RIFSoCal, Sandi Marvich (NuSkin), Kimberly Reid, Laura Marlow (Author of Tommy the Throwaway Dog) and most of all, to the STUDENTS, for making this day, and this life, simply magical.  You are LOVED beyond measure!

4. My work with CCHR Florida

This organization is lead by Earth Angel, Laurie Anspach in conjunction with the CCHR Florida Youth Group (a small army of powerful young leaders who are changing the world one hug at a time).  Right now, you can purchase a copy of my book, “What Love Is A-Z” through their site, and 100% of the proceeds will support their powerful mission to serve, empower, and educate the population while exposing psychiatric violations against adults and children.

To learn more, please click the link…need support for yourself, a family member or a friend?  Call their National Hotline.  You are never alone–thanks to CCHR Florida.

5. For my team, who makes everything I do possible–we’re not meant to do it all on our own, and good thing too because, who would want to?

For the Writers Quotes I heard along the way…

6. “I love deadlines; I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by..” ~Douglas Adams

7. “There are two kinds of writer; those who make you think, and those who make you wonder.” ~Brian Aldiss

8. Asking a working writer how he feels about his critics is like asking a lamppost how he feels about dogs.” ~Christopher Hampton

9. “No tale tells all.” ~Alexei Panshin

10. “We write to taste life twice.” Anais Nin

For the Questions the children asked me this past week during Q&A that made me laugh, think, smile, reflect and even cry… (I love being a Children’s Book Author–have I mentioned that?)

11. “Do you ever yell?”  Ask by a first grader with ponytails and pink fingernails..

12. “When I grow up, will you buy my book?” Asked by a 3rd grade boy, who planned to write a book about cars.

I told him I’d only buy his book if he promised to autograph it for me.

13. “Will you come back every Friday?” Asked by a 2nd grader who thought it would be a great idea to do Love Jars and book readings each and every Friday.

While I whole-heartedly agreed that there would be no better way to spend our Fridays, I let the child know that I’d have to run that idea past the school board…

14. “Do we get a copy of your book?”

Thanks to RIFSoCal, I was able to answer, “Yes”.
Thank you, RIFSoCal!

15. “Do you ever take kids home to your house?”

No…but trust me when I say I want to!

They are just so cute…
For the gifts my family gave from the heart for Valentines Day–one of my most favorite Holidays:

16. Flowers…

(I realize they came from the neighbors yard..he’s little…he meant well.)

17. Two words: Sees Candy.

This has to be what Heaven tastes like.

18. Homemade cards, with coloring that runs ever so slightly outside the lines in an obvious display of concentrated effort on behalf of well intending child.

Children are what love is.

19. For Love Letters.

20. For Heart Shaped Rocks.  They make excellent Paperweights.

For adventures and the folks you meet along the way:

21. For the man in East LA, who couldn’t speak English, but understood I need directions–he grabbed a napkin and pen from his glove box, and drew me a map, and then sent me on my way with a smile and a nod.

22. For good (and very brave)  friends who help drag homeless drunk people and their belongings out of the street while everyone else drives by, narrowly missing his legs (thank you, Catherine–you’re an Earth Angel).

23. For the kid ahead of me in line who didn’t have enough money to pay for his Subway Sandwich.

Love shares, knowing there is always enough.  God bless the people in line who offered to contribute.

24. For One Way Streets…or rather, for the fact that I have survived going the wrong way on these streets more times than I can count.

I guess what I’m really grateful for here is my survival…

25. For safe travels…I’ve done a lot of traveling during the past 12 days, and I’m grateful to be home, safe and sound.

For Sunday Mornings

26.  The Quiet

27. The snoring dog at my feet as I type

28. The scent of fresh cinnamon rolls

29. The coupons that wait patiently in the center of the LA Times

30. Hot tea with Honey and Mint Sprigs from my garden

31. Mismatched Fuzzy Socks

32. The hummingbird who stares through the kitchen window…what is he looking for exactly?

33. Free time to meditate, engage in pilates, and open my heart space

For Sunday Plans, loosely unstructured–

34. Bike Rides to the park

35. Sidewalk Chalk

36. Thank You Notes

37. A visit to our Monkey at the Moorpark Zoo

38. Raspberry Frozen Yogurts

39. Time to gather clothing donations for Tuesdays pick-up

40. For the fact that I love my life the way I do–I see any plans, no plans at all, and the plans the fall in mid-flight, all as blessings.

41. For my personal Truth, Beliefs and Feelings, and for the freedom to respectfully share them without consequence in the United States of America.

Newt Gingrich frightens me.  I realize he has a purpose–we all do–

but still, he scares me a little.

A man who believes that our countries poorest children should be mopping our floors, is likely a man who should be…mopping our floors.

K, I feel better now.

42. For Women who bend the rules a little in the name of greater good.

It’s been said that no well-behaved woman has ever made history.

43.  For how good this feels…

44. For the dedicated and unparalleled educators and faculty members of the LAUSD.

Let us honor those who teach to serve the children and the world.

45. For free-will.

When you hear bad news (and there’s plenty of it floating around these days within the sound bytes of life), don’t ask “God, why?”; instead ask, “God, how can I contribute to the solution?”
You’re here on purpose, there are no mistakes, and it’s all unfolding in divine order. Please do not look away–instead, look within.

Please, please, do not play small.

46. For gratitude in and of itself

47. For the healing effect this soul food called “Gratitude” has on my life

48. For the blessings that roll through me as naturally as breathing

49. For the ability to express myself in words, so that I might never burst…

50. For the 50th Day of the Year–so far, I am LOVING 2012!

60 blessings today–we’re nearly through, yet I could go on and on.

For what we must always remember:

51. Our potential is limitless.

52. All things are possible with Love.

53. We were created to shift the world..each of us, in our own magnificent way.

54. We were created to raise our voice, and the vibration of humanity.  There is no mistake that you or I are here right now.

55. The answers are inside you–all of them.  The hardest part about that is being quiet long enough to listen…but it’s worth shutting up for.

56. We are each one whole part of a bigger whole.

57. We were each created for greatness–each meant to contribute something, or some things, that no one else on earth could possible offer.

I swear…

58.  To forgive is to set yourself FREE–love yourself enough.

59. We are each perfect, just the way we are.

60. There is no more powerful way to shift your perspective, and your life, than to count your blessings.

What are you grateful for today?

Wow..Nan, I’m honored to know you, love you, and be loved by you.

If you’re a parent, teacher or care provider, check this out!

I’m grateful to know I share the planet with people like Nan.

Day 31 ~ And 155 reasons.

1 Feb

Has it really been 31 days?! Wow! What a year already!

If you started Jan. 1, 2012, then you’ve counted 155 reasons to celebrate your life…and if you started yesterday, then welcome! You’re right on time..

Gratitude for today, Day 31 (already, somehow)

1. Long conversations with my Dad…we never realize we’ve been on the line as long as we have been because the conversation, connection and laughter is as natural as breathing.

I so love that guy.

2. Watching the dream of a longtime, very close friend come true.

Her tenacity, passion and inspired action have lead to a new product that has the power to shift lives
I’m grateful to know someone so astounding, and so bright.

3. Leftovers.

Some food is just better the next day!

Like Chinese food…mmmmm.

4. I found $11 dollars in my jacket pocket this morning.

Oddly, just the other day, I donated a coat to the guy behind Target.
I’d left $10 in the pocket.

5. For my little boys singing voice. From the bathtub, I hear him singing the theme sing to iCarly.

God, he’s cute.

What are you grateful for today?

Count your blessings.

Day 29 ~ Are you with me?

30 Jan

It’s a daily thing; 5 a day, in pictures, in words, and in affirmation.

Are you with me?

Gratitude for today, Day 29

1. Children’s Birthday Parties–I love them! The excitement, the party games, the friendships, the laughter…the cake..

(I love cake.)

These mini-ragers bring back memories~

2. Kids jokes.

(It’s always good to have a spare kid joke in your back pocket.)

Joke:
Why was 6 afraid of 7?

Answer:

Cause 7, 8, 9!!

Get it?

7, 8, 9…

3. Every stitch of laundry is DONE.

I feel so accomplished..

4. “Tommy the Throwaway Dog“, By Laura Marlow — based on a true story. It was our bedtime story tonight, and one of Sprouts favorites.

Thank you Laura Marlow for this beautiful contribution to children’s literature.

5. Fuzzy socks, and Jammie’s still warm from the dryer.

Its only as difficult as you make it..and it’s your turn!

What are you grateful for today?

Day 20 ~ Your Dreams Are Your Reality…in Que.

21 Jan

“Start light, star bright, first star I see tonight–I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish, I wish tonight.”

My mother taught me that rhyme when I was a little girl–I remember feeling so excited, so sure that whatever wish I made would come true...

I’d say, “Can I tell you what I wished for?”  And she would say, “If you tell your wish, it wont come true.

(Apparently , she was wrong–thank goodness!)

A wish, or dream that lives within your heart is already alive and in Que, quietly preparing to  unfold in your life–if it is from your heart, then it is simply so…and so it is.

Gratitude for Today, Day 20

1. For the first star I see tonight, and for the wish I know came true before I wished it.

2. For dandelions.

I love those magical little flowers...always have.

3. For wishing wells, ponds and fountains full of promises and shiny coins.

4. For pennies on the sidewalk, just waiting to be wished upon.

5. For candles–they don’t have to be birthday candles.  Every time you blow a candle out, make a wish..see it, feel it, embrace it.

If you can dream it, wish it, hope it,speak it or write it, it’s possible.

The dream that lives within the heart, is your reality in Que.

Count your blessings.

Day 18 ~ For Love In Action

19 Jan

This morning, I heard a story of a woman in Florida who leaves Post-It notes everywhere she goes. She writes inspirational messages and reminders to the heart on little yellow , sticky squares, and she leaves them, literally everywhere, for complete strangers to happen by~

What an easy way to Love.

Blessings for today, Day 18

1. For Love in action.

2. For my new Post-It notes made from 100% recycled paper.

Yes, I’m completely inspired…

3. For “Let’s Make A Deal!” My Sister-Friends and I have a 1 in 18 chance of winning a car or a camel this June–woohoo!

I hear Camels are sweet once they get to know you…

4. Sprout-Guy finally lost his other front tooth, which means the Tooth-Fairy will be making her visit later tonight — I’ve always wondered what she looks like. (I’ll bet she wears a flower for a dress…)

5. For those who have volunteered to support inner city youth with me on February10th, and for all who have donated empty baby food jars for the Love Jar Self Esteem project. I am so grateful for your support.

To read more, or apply to volunteer, click here.

You are the gift!

Now, go pick up some Post-It notes…

And, count your blessings.
